I'm not familiar with Lords of Madness (I'm not familiar with most 3/3.5e stuff), so I didn't know about that. Frankly, it sounds like a really silly reboot to me. One of the things that I liked about the Illithiad was the way the in-universe author dismissed the Astromundi Chronicles as being clearly misinformed, and presented an alternate explanation for the appearance of illithids in Astromundi (they were fleeing from the collapse of their empire, but they weren't fleeing through time).
