Well I'm not bothered about my SJ work, it *is* based off *their*
copyright stuff :)
I'd just be hopping MAD if they didn't credit me as the creator of my
own works though.
On debates about such stuff, I keep pointing out to folk that really,
now, copyright is a joke, all that really matters is that the creator be
respected, morally, more than legally.
Digital Age and forward means that allowing copyright as corporations
etc want becomes dangerous...look at the insanity of the Record Industry
in America, Digital Right Management (root kits!) and so on. *Creators*,
real human beings, need respect and protection, NOT corporations (which
are unreal figments of human society), and who are inimical to Human
freedom and safety.
I'll give an example:
-Nano technology means in say, 100 years, it could really be possible to
have the "Star Trek" replictors for real. Ever seen a 3d model making
machine work? It shows what I mean, a model, like mine is passed to a
device which turns it into an actual solid object. Thus, in the future,
nanotechnology could possibly create anything you wish, from raw
materials and a blue print.
-Where is the problem with this? Look at the End User License Agreements
(EULAs) on most software today, many of them are illegal,
un-Constitutional and bloody immoral, preventing honest re-sale
(AutoDesk does that with 3DMAX and has repeatedly got slammed in court
but they make too much money too care), some have tried to claim
copyright of ANYTHING made with the program etc (Poser program creators
tried that one and got shot down).
-Imagine a future, where every object is made in your home by your
"replicator", form a blueprint, but the blueprint has a EULA, and thus,
you own *nothing* but the right to use the products made from it, as
long as the copyright owner sees fit...think about it...people would
have no real property rights, and don’t think the corporations wouldn't
try and do that, they've already proved they HAVE done that, or tried
to, and even worse.
I'm for preventing commercial theft, and definitely for preventing of
folk claming work to be their's, when they didn't make it...but I'm more
scared about losing democratic freedoms and abandoning common sense to
corporations and shysters.
In the case of Dragon mag, it was cool :) I emailed them asking why they
didn't credit me...turns out they needed source material, but the artist
didn't realize my work wasn't part of the Dragon/WOTC material he could
*directly* use, as opposed to *inspirational* work he couldn’t use
directly but could use for background. Not a lot of SJ material for them
to give him, and since he wasn't a fan, how could he know what was
original and what was fan art?
-So rather than get a bug up my ass and freak/grub for money, they
apologized, printed a credit, all was cool....that's how sensible adults
behave :)
-Was also cool to see an almost exact copy of my Tradesman, down to the
flag, in Dragon, woot! :D

I personally am not so worried about them "stealing"
(or whatever you want to call it) anything from me
(its not all that valuable, really, given its a
defunct setting), but I can certainly think Steven's
fear is justified. His artwork would be VERY tempting
to WotC to simply take & use without permission or
compensation...hell, its been done before! (remember
the "tradesman" in Dungeon a few years back) I could
very easily see them snatch his MoW to use on their
site, perhaps as an elven ship on the Astral Sea. :p
Were I him, I'd keep that thing as far away from
WotC's site as possible! :p
