Back from my (all-too-brief) vacation, getting caught
up :)

I'd go with the art. The deckplans have always been
kinda...screwy. I would leave some "dead space" for
organic bits. ;)
The MoW, & the Armada, should display the greatest
varity in design of any ship, IMHO, mostly for two
reasons:
1) Its a plant. Designing one should be sorta like
shaping a bonzi plant; you can't make factory-stamped
plants! ;)
2) Elves are generally chaotic; the whole "the elf
fleet is lawful" bit never really sits very well. The
elven shipwrights would very likely personalize every
ship, and individual captains would personalize them
even more. They shouldn't (IMHO) be cookie-cutters of
one another :)

Those are probably the "ribs" of the ship sticking out
a bit; I've seen similar things on classic windjammers
(I think they're largely used as anchors for rigging).
They're probably both functional anchors for wing
lines, and aestically pleasing. I'd imagine that the
MoW has a good amount of rigging that's just never
been shown anywhere in any picture.
