You are absolutely right. Mystara, I think, is one of the most
overlooked of D&D campaign settings, in part because it was largely
left out of the AD&D boom of the 80s and 90s until near the very end.

Red Steel is a wonderful tool for merging AD&D and OD&D rules
together, as it provides you with a guideline for making conversions.
In addition to Red Steel, there are also the Creature Crucible books,
which put together exponentially expand the number of races
available. One neat thing I've done in past Ravenloft campaigns was
make "Night Howlers" -- a Creature Crucible product that details
playing Lycanthrope characters -- available to players alongside the
"Requiem" rules for playing as Undead. (as well as ad-hoc Golem PC
rules based on the writings of Van Richten, for a perfect Ravenloft
creatures of the night trifecta)

In general there are more options in Mystara than on most other
worlds -- especially if you include the Hollow World.
