Well, except that the Arcane were properly introduced into the  
Planescape setting in PS MC II, one of two very obvious Spelljammer  
refugees presented in that book (the other being the Tso, planar  
cousins of the Neogi). In that book it does reference the Arcane  
being merchants of spelljamming goods on the Prime, but also peddling  
goods on the Planes as well.

If it were up to me, I would not give either planar or spelljamming  
Arcane such a silly name as "Mercane."
