But is it a *negative* opinion, hm? It's just a different opinion, IMHO :) Negative would be a bigoted, nasty or otherwise "bad" opinion based on ignorance or bad morals/ethics. On the one hand, saying that "Arcane" share a name with a type of magic and that causes possible problems, is valid, BUT...why shouldn't a race be called after what they seem to be very intertwined with? :) Like, Spellweavers..they "weave spells"...logical? The Arcane seem to have some secret ability to craft Arcane devices....thus, they are synonymous with both trade, and crafting arcane items. "Arcane" sounds more mysterious, Mercane sounds more aquatic or simply mercantile. I'm not a "stick in the mud" ;) I preffer the later editions of (A)D&D, but some things from previous eras WERE better. As said elsewhere too, I think the very first boxed sets for the Forgotten Realms, Ravenloft and Dark Sun were the best, largely because forcing change down players' throats is abominable, much of what they changed/added was dumb (official history of Athas is retarded and so was killing off the Sorceror kings!!!), and especially for the Forgotten Realms, prostituted the setting and totally ruined the mystery, by describing every bloody bit of it so NOTHING was "Forgotten", lol!! -Many add-ons were good, such as Dune Trader for Dark Sun, but when they changed important things, they threw spanners in campaigns. -Another factor is quality, the 1st Forgotten Realms boxed set is a true work of art, beautifully printed, illustrated and written. The last boxed set TSR released for the Realms, 3rd iirc, was excrement! Art work, printing values and layout were shoddy beyond belief. Sigh :( -Good things in current 3rd ed are much better layout of the books, far better referenced and organized, the artwork of the 3 core books including page printing is pleasurable, reading them is a tactile/visual joy. Another point to remember when chatting across the Net, is to use smilies...even if it seems infantile at times, it's vital, because the intent of a person's words can come across totally wrong, as we can't see the other person wink, grasp subtle sarcasm, may not be a native English speaker and so on ;) -Some folk seem hurt by my dislike of 1st/2nd ed, I'm sorry, there was no sleight made against them as *people*! :) In such arguments, I tend to think the problem folk forget is that it's like comparing driving a modern car, to one form say, the 1950s. The older car may well have had better style, but a lot of the charm is really nostalgia, enjoyment of what was a new concept, wide open roads not jam packed full of "Magic the Blasted Card game" players and so on, hehe! The mechanics *do* improve, but that's not the be all and end all of what we each enjoy to play, I know, but a modern car *is* generlaly miles more comfortable and reliable, whether folk like it or not. Also, some folk have views against WOTC...which I find odd as TSR especially near the end, were lead by proto-typical corporate sociopaths (in the sense of profit before all, including good business sense, ironically) who damned near destroyed D&D forever. I've heard plenty of dumb things WOTC/Hasborg (you will be assimilated! :>) have done too, ick. But *currently*, and I say that guardedly, they are keeping our hobby alive. Which is good for all of us :) -----Original Message----- From: Spelljammer Setting Discussion [mailto:SPELLJAMMER-L@??????.???????.com] On Behalf Of Bill Olander Sent: 26 August 2007 13:22 To: SPELLJAMMER-L@??????.???????.com Subject: Re: [SPELLJAMMER] Planejammer Yeah Sorry. I realized after I was in bed last night that the way to fight against negative opinions was not in fact to be cranky. I came up with a better idea. -- Bill Olander http://www.darktouch.net On 8/26/07, Loki <george.williams.iv@?????.com> wrote: > > Bill and Matt: > keep the discussion civil and free from personal slurs. > > We are all here because of a common interest in SJ and if we all agreed > with > each other on everything there would be no need for this e-list. > > Thanks! > Loki No virus found in this outgoing message.
