On the matter of an SJ contests... let's not just forget about it,
let's actually do it!

Would it be possible to set up some kind of web-submission form? Or
to have someplace online where people can read and judge submissions
without having to download them all? (I don't know how you guys have
done this thing in the past, what file formats you prefer, or if text-
in-email is the preferred medium) And what's the criteria on judging?

You know what might be fun? In a separate corner of the internet,
some friends of mine and I hold a semi-annual writing contest. The
way it works is, three people each select an "ingredient" (that is,
something that must go into the story: a plot element, a character
archetype, a narrative device, etc.) and those ingredients are only
unveiled at the start of the contest. From there, writers have one
week to craft a story using said ingredients, and at the end of that
week we all read, rate and critique each others' work (a process
which actually sometimes takes a couple months to complete). The
three top-scorers get to be the "ingredient" selectors at the next
contest.

As I was thinking about BTM contests this morning, I wondered if
something similar might be workable here. Maybe not the exact
formula, but something like a unified theme that is only given at the
beginning of the contest (e.g. "design something involving a secret
Reigar plan to prank the Arcane"), or maybe multiple themes to keep
the contest diverse in the NPCs/Villains/ships and etc. that are
submitted.

Then again, that might be more rules-heavy than people are used to
dealing with here, but it could turn the contest into a vehicle to
flesh out the kind of information that is currently up on BTM (that
is, a theme can be selected that helps the site to represent some
under-represented aspect of the SJ universe). I'm also not sure about
how you guys feel about the idea that this "theme"-based approach
would effectively keep packrats like me from dredging up years-old
text files from the bowels of my computer, polish them up and submit
them for a contest; it does sort of mandate something written
expressly for a given contest. Anyway. What does everybody think?
