One thing that always bothered me about UTDF was that it introduced a couple of new spelljammer races -- creatures that were really sort of unique, and really fit the Spelljammer melieu very well (as opposed to just being space elves, or space orcs, or whatever) -- and then we wouldn't even get an MC sheet for them. That just kills me!! As a D&D gamer, I like to see sheets of stats and numbers and definitions of what things can and cannot do, because in a way it helps to make the game creature more tangible to me. It's like the part of a D&D character or creature that you can hold in your hand (or, maybe, hold in your brain) and play with. Look, alls I'm saying is that if berserker werewolves and human fighter-wizards deserve their own MC entry, maybe creatures like the Kra'aken and the Salzarians deserve them as well. I took liberties with the Kra'aken and arbitrarily, unilaterally redfined the pronunciation of that word. Partially, this was in keeping with my longstanding goal to eradicate the senseless use of the superfluous apostrophe in fantasy literature where ever I encounter it. So, I gave that lazy, pretentious apostrophe a job! Apostrophe, I said, you make that second "a" go "AH." It's also a little homage to the first time I learned how to properly pronounce "Baatezu" (which, you'll note, accomplishes the same sound I gave Kra'aken without the damn apostrophe). I should also mention that I changed the pronunciation because it was implied that it was simply pronounced "Kraken," and that sort of bugged me. Not just because of the apostrophe. I just have this thing about confusing psionic pseudo- celestials with giant evil squids from Norse mythology -- my therapist and I are slowly working through that particular issue. Baby steps, Matt. Baby steps. All that we know about the Kra'aken from UTDF is that they look vaguely like celestials, and that they are telepaths. The telepathy I naturally parlayed into the ability to advance as Psionicists, and from their inquisitive natures I gave them a limited multi-classing capability. I'm not sure where I got those plant-based spell-like powers from. I think I just figured they'd have them, since they live in a giant airbag filled with giant chunks of stellar floral foam. (the image I use in my head when thinking of Kra'akenspace) Though this is not presented in the writeup below, the MC writeup I have on Kra'aken has them as 5+3 HD monsters. I'm undecided as to what their base AC, move rates or base creature psi powers should be, but I would put their Int range at 16-18 and their alignment as Lawful Neutral, possibly Lawful Good. And as for the Salzarians? Well, they are 500' diameter immortal spheres of water with thousands of hit points and a complete immunity to magic. I didn't see anything there that needed much changing or elaboration. Anyway, here are the Kra'aken and the Salzarians. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Kra'aken - Kra'akenspace (kray-AH-ken-space) is a sphere with no gravitational bodies. The entire sphere is filled with breathable air, and within it hang large, floating chunks of porous green plantlife. Upon, within and between these floating organic asteroids, the Kra'aken make their homes. The Kra'aken (sometimes simply called Kra or Kray) are a largely pacifistic race of natural telepaths who have a decidedly celestial appearance about them. They are tall, with willowy builds and are somewhat semi-transparent, as though ethereal (though, to the touch, one can see that they are quite solid). They possess angelic wings, and physically can resemble all the diversity of humanity in terms of their features of skin, hair and eye color. Kra'aken have an ESP ability usable at will, and have no need for language since they can communicate with any being telepathically. Still, those who have experience with outsiders learn to understand alien languages anyway, since on occasion they encounter races immune to ESP and have found it useful to be able to read the changes in inflection that come with language use (which is no substitute for ESP; at best it is like allowing one's eyes to adjust to sudden darkness). Kra'aken are also attuned to the plantlife native to their sphere, and are able to use the spell-like powers Plant Growth and Speak with Plants 1/day each. All Kra'aken are Psionicists, and as a race they have unlimited advancement potential. Because of their generally weak Constitutions, most Kra'aken prefer the mental disciplines of psionics, like telepathy and clairsentience. With exposure to new races and cultures, Kra'aken are learning to adapt to new professions as well: some individuals may choose to multi-class as Fighters, Thieves or Bards, though with these other classes their inexperience clearly shows (limit of 3rd level in all three). Kra'aken are not overly fond of magic, and never pursue spellcasting classes (Kra'aken Bards do not cast spells), though they do admire Druids (despite being unable to adopt said class, as faith is an alien concept to them). Kra'aken take the following ability score adjustments: -3 to Strength, -2 to Constitution, +3 Wisdom, +2 Intelligence. The Salzarians - Salzarians are 500' diameter immortal spheres of water with thousands of hit points and a complete immunity to magic. Though they would undoutedly present an interesting role-playing challenge, this race is not available for player characters (though, by comparison, it makes the Golotian Dragon PCs look just fine).
