And here I have ideas on running a campaign with custom races in which
humans, their kin and halflings basically don't exist. Their role taken over by
furry races.

I once ran a campaign where the characters were a tuna sandwich, a
VHS tape of the Wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Di, a pewter
miniature of Eva Peron and a mint-condition first run Kenner Boba
Fett action figure, who were all employed by the Czar to track down
and publicly pants the guy who killed Archduke Ferdinand. The climax
was a biplane chase over the 405 freeway in Los Angeles, wherein the
VHS tape was nearly digitized and rendered obsolete by an evil Laser
Disc, and Boba Fett lost 65% of his dollar value when he got his arm
shot off by ace German biplane pilot, Chancellor Angela Merkel. Eva
Peron was able to replace the lost arm with a soldering lead
prosthesis, whereafter Eva and Boba fell madly in love and pledged to
be married. But this set off an ill-fated love triangle, as the VHS
tape had had his own designs on Eva Peron (things weren't going all
that well with Princess Di around this time, you see). But before
that potential conflict could bear fruit, about midway through the
campaign, Boba's player left and he was replaced by some New
Zealander whose voice just didn't seem to fit the character that the
original player had created (granted, he was always kind of 2-d
anyway...). Eva Peron and Boba Fett just didn't have the magical
romantic chemistry they used to -- not even during the module that
had the party paired up with NPCs Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in a
very special D&D musical adventure.

... No, I do not know where I thought I was going with this when I
sat down to write this email. Why do you ask?

Yeah, not every race has to be normal human-based!
Besides, I like Giff. One thing that made SJ good, was that it is =
slightly
tongue in cheek and humorous. Some settings, like Dark Sun and =
Ravenloft,
are dark, brooding and morbid, but FFS, you don't want that ALL the =
time! ;)

The Giff are logical as a race, they make sense, they are humorous but =
also
dangerous. What's not to like? :)

I think that furry races are like anything else in D&D. They have their=20
place in the great scheme of things. If they are overdone they can seem =
a=20
bit corny. But in specific campaign settings they *can* be given a=20
background that really makes sense.

A man with the head of a hippo might seem a bit nuts to Erik Mona, but =
*no*=20
fantasy race is logical. That is the entire point of fantasy - to be =
stuff=20
that is impossible. If elves were just humans with pointed ears they=20
wouldn't be interesting enough to play.

Ick, that's one reason why I came to hate Star Trek Next Generation: all =
the
aliens were just Humans with slight prosthetic make up: what a load of
BOLLOCKS! ;)
Babylon5 did a far better job showing each race has its idiosyncrasies,
dress and art style etc.

Giff are nicely defined: they are professional soldiers, they like
explosives, they like a chain of command, they can't do magic, they =
won't
fight each other, they are big and hit very, very hard. The fact they =
have
hippo heads just emphasizes this, and along with their peculiar ways, =
makes
them both comical, and dangerous. They are *characters*, not just flat
boring wanna-be-humans.
You might snicker at a giff's pomp, but you'd NEVER laugh at his ability =
to
chop boarding enemies to mincemeat.

Giff rock! :)

Bleh, that's silly. Animal-headed races have been
with D&D since the start. =20

Frankly, the game is choked with so many races as is.=20
They could do better by just greatly expanding the
races they currently have, instead of trying outpace
Star Trek in the "humans with funny nose" race. :p

I don't know...B5 fell into the same traps in the end,
with far too many alien races. Those were usually
grouped in the "League of Non-aligned Races". :p

I seem to recall an image of a giff that was less
hippo-like and more...alien. With the right redesign,
they could have features that'd best be described as
"hippo-like", only because that's the closest thing
that they resemble. :)

And you'd better be able to run if you tell them
otherwise...:D

That actually sounds like a pretty cool campaign to
me. Did you ever get a chance to run it, and if so,
how'd it turn out? :)

I did not get a chance to run it, unfortunately. It just became
another one of those unpolished homebrew creations that clutters the
hard drive never to see the light of day :-p

That's a shame...in the same boat, but a shame none
the less. :)
