Ick, that's one reason why I came to hate Star Trek Next Generation: all the
aliens were just Humans with slight prosthetic make up: what a load of
BOLLOCKS! ;)
Babylon5 did a far better job showing each race has its idiosyncrasies,
dress and art style etc.
Giff are nicely defined: they are professional soldiers, they like
explosives, they like a chain of command, they can't do magic, they won't
fight each other, they are big and hit very, very hard. The fact they have
hippo heads just emphasizes this, and along with their peculiar ways, makes
them both comical, and dangerous. They are *characters*, not just flat
boring wanna-be-humans.
You might snicker at a giff's pomp, but you'd NEVER laugh at his ability to
chop boarding enemies to mincemeat.
Giff rock! :)

Bleh, that's silly. Animal-headed races have been
with D&D since the start.
Frankly, the game is choked with so many races as is.
They could do better by just greatly expanding the
races they currently have, instead of trying outpace
Star Trek in the "humans with funny nose" race. :p
