Subject: Re: Beholder Tyrant Ship deck-plans
Hello everyone,

I have recently renewed my interest in the Spelljammmer setting and
have discovered this list. A comment in the [SPELLJAMMER] Mosquito A4
card? thread got me thinking about doing some deck-plans and possibly
new ship designs for Beholder Tyrant Ships. The Lorebook of the Void
(page 23) included the stats for a 23 ton tyrant ship and show
pictures of 5 different tyrant ship designs, and has a larger copy on
the back cover. The central picture includes a beholder floating near
to the ship (and casting a shadow on it), assuming that the beholder
is of average size (4-6' wide), then the ship has a diameter of
between 60' and 90', but the margin of error on this calculation is
quite high. (for interest, this is the design of Tyrant Ship that
Andrew Allen depicts so dramatically in this picture
http://www.spelljammer.org/art/AndrewAllen/TyrantPursuit.gif)

SJA1: Wildspace added the smaller 13 ton Tyrant Scout Ship, while the
War Captains Companion: Ship Recognition Guide uses one of the
pictures from the Lorebook to represent it.

Now enough rambling from me, and my question: where do you all think
the gravity planes should be on Beholder Tyrant ships? especially
those with radial symmetry as seen from the front?

a) Gravity Plane perpendicular to axis of ship?
b) A penta-fold arrangement similar to that on the K'r'r'r Unity Ship,
but with 5 planes rather than 3! (complicated).
c) A 'Gravity Axis' the ships gravity attracts objects towards the
ships axis.

ATM I think that a) is closest to the spirit of Spelljammer physics
(and is possibly makes most sense of the design). Note that this
wouldn't apply to all Tyrant Ship designs.

Second question: ATM I think that 'flattening out' the internal 'bowl'
of the tyrant ship and showing it from the front is probably the most
useful way to depict the floorplans - does anyone agree, or have a
better way to do this?

Anyway, for a first post I've gone on enough!
