Subject: [SPELLJAMMER] Building the Wasp in 3d

Started work on the Wasp in 3d, some points and problems:

-The wasp looks like a MOSQUITO, not a wasp! Artistic design is very whimpy
fragile vessel, which doesn’t make sense. Lizardmen don’t really make
“whimpy” things. They need a tough, small cargo/fighter ship to get their
eggs near suns, plus trade etc. So I’m going to make it look more like an
actual wasp, not a mosquito.

-Head section isn’t supported, it would literally fall off!!

-too much metal in colour illsutration, made by lizardmen, who are metal
poor, and metal’s far too heavy (iron is 17times or more the weight of wood)

-Kept it to deckplan scale except I made an error, made stern cargo 10’
longer, bah, don’t want to go re-build whole ship though, sigh

-Front eyes on illustration poke way too far to sides, almost out on stalks,
but, limits vision terribly, so I put eyes flush with body and thus look
more ahead and give miles better view for folk in the foredeck.

-Upper deck with wings is a mess, no way to get around up there! Improved
deck up there and will work on that issue so folk could get to railings to
fight.

-Ornate front-half of the “head” railings near the prow, I think I’ll put
them in though they serve no purpose I can see, nice artistically, but not
practically.

-legs make no sense at all, I’ll re-position them to resemble real wasp
legs, and add a base to the tail (a small landing pad), small landing pads
on each “foot” of legs, wire them up with ropes to give a plausible landing
system.

-Hull should be capable of landing in water too (*) my design should be a
bit easier to do so. Lizardmen = semi-aquatic folk but with limited tech.

-Internals totally neglect large space under main deck, rebuild shows large
area below there capable of being an under deck. When considering ship size,
crew etc, original plan is, well, borked. I can keep to original scale (bar
that error), add an under deck which will considerably improve ship’s cargo
space. Leg joints to the body will reduce useable area a but I think but
should allow far better cabin space. This could be the “flooded” area used
for food, eggs, recreation etc.

-While keeping to original deckplan, the addition of under deck will
alleviate the problem that the crew cabin area 2, is meant to hold 8
LIZARDMEN…though Lorebook fo the Void says they don’t care about where they
sleep..I doubt that since lizards like most creatures require a secure
sleeping spot.

-large upper working that connects ballista to foredeck…artistically nice,
practically dumb (but artistic is vital to SJ as it’s major part of flavour
and maybe it serves some esoteric function), will keep it, but in wood

-Decks have to be 7’ or more high, lizard men are big.

-Upper deck slopes from rear down to front, no idea why I just made it flat.

-Colour illustration has the ballista and it’s turret at a 45 degree angle
to the deck! Decks are level, it’s the tail that hangs down.

-I’ll add some bracing to the tail and note it has a small cargo hold.

-Ships sizes don’t’ add up, keel length says 80’, internal deckplan shows
70’, my 10’ error actually makes up for this, lol, but neither accounts for
length of tail.

-Description in Lorebook of the Void page 21 says “the lower decks of
central area are often flooded”…deckplans have *no* lower decks, thus my
addition of a lower deck makes up for this. Additionally the “Bee” class has
two turrets added underneath which would be hard if there isn’t an under
deck.

For scale, the open door is 7’ high x 4’ wide

Sorry I try and make the SJ ships practical, I love the original designs,
but always approach building them from a “how would I be able to use and
work on this ship?” sort of view

Opinions? :-)
