Both of your suggestions helped me start to solidify something that was only
a vague sort of idea in my head.

History: These beings (name pending) trace their origin back to a group of
Maenead who crash landed their Spelljammer on a cluster world. Because of
the nature of the difficult terrain (mutiple moving asteroids sharing a
single air envelope) they domesticated the a local six-legged feline species
as mounts, using their leaping abilities to get around from rock to rock
quickly and easily.

About the Maenads: Maenads are a tall humanoid race with crystal speckled
skin. Their primary personality trait is an enforced stoicism that they use
to keep their violent rage in check (ala Vulcans). They also have an
affinity for sonic based psionic powers.

Benefits and other effects of the companions: First there is the obvious
getting arround. Maenad's are primarily a fishing peoples. In the cluster,
water is spread out through various little pools and the like that form
based on the seasons. Getting around quickly and efficiently is a big
benefit. Additionally, over time the companionship has allowed the Maenads
to ease their rage and allowed them to find a level of inner peace. Their
mental powers have shifted focus towards increasing the bonds with their
animal companions.

About the Cats: I imagine them as proto-displacer beasts. Six legged felines
adept at jumping and hiding. No tentacles. They're on the level of wolves in
terms of power and their extra set of legs makes them particularly stable on
the shifting asteroids. They're domesticated, have grown a little from their
original size to make better mounts and have an imprinting that happens
similar to pern dragons if you're familiar with that work.

I don't really want to give a full class feature to a race.. but was
thinking more along the lines of having their favored class be druid or
ranger.. probably ranger.
