Such themes crop in literature, especially pop
culture, from time to time.

I think the things you need to look at include:

* What role does the animal companion fulfill? A
hunting dog or falcon? A mount? Or something more
exotic?

* What happens when the animal dies? D&D is a pretty
violent game, and its likely an animal companion will
bite it. What happens? Can it be replaced?

* How powerful is the animal? Familiar-level of
power, wolf-level, or a warhorse?

* Does the animal increase in power with the
companion?

* What effect does this animal companion have on the
druid class ability, as well as familiars?

Anyways, good candidates for this would be gnomes,
halflings, and even kobolds & goblins, if you don't
want to create a new race.
