You might try and knock together a rough history of this race and
what pressures led them to the symbosis. I often find that a
history gives me interesting features of a race, not all
positive, that I might otherwise of overlooked.

Say, you might have a world where there are creatures who steal
the spirits of others, for a while, then let them return to their
bodies, to 'charge up' enough to provide another meal. After a
bit of this unadapted off-world species, like humans, tend to go
really thoroughly insane.

Say a related species somehow allied with the humans, to provide
them with senses warning of these spirit predators, and maybe
even some sort of protection or ablity to fight them, say in
spirit combat. And in return they get an intelligence boost, and
maybe they feed on their humans at a low level, which doesn't
drive them insane. After a while the humans can't do well
without their companions, but, they are very useful!

Does that go anywhere towards what you want???
