While I have a lot of respect for the impressive work of JRR, a
lot of people forget that there was also Mike Moorcock, the
original Conan author, Robert E. Howard, I think it was, and a
few others.  Jack Vance, of course.

In some respects Moorcock was the most influential...

Certainly very few people seemed to know about ideas like
alternate planes of reality, and the Multiverse, not to mention
the Law-Chaos axis, before he came along.

Before Moorcock it was always in 'the mists of prehistory', or
'in the far future when magic rules again'.
