These ancient beings could have been the wellspring from which humans, demi-humans, and other races arose. Later, gods took the basic design & created their own versions of these races. Perhaps humans & elves are latecomers; the true original race was the Forerunners, the ancient ancestors of the gith races. >From the Forerunners arose humans, elves, gith, etc. Or not.
