I didn't say that Neogi not needing to breathe was silly. I said that being willing to assume as much and take it into cannon based on a singular, parenthetical, unexplained and unjustified throw-away reference to non-breathing Neogi was silly. Especially when there is much more compelling evidence (air-usage explication for Neogi vessels, the MC entry for Undead Old Masters, etc.) to suggest that they *do* breathe. And yes, much of AD&D fantasy is inherently silly :) But that's not really what we're discussing here; that's kind of a given.
