Subject: Re: Maj Space: Maj - Neapolis (NPCs)
These are some NPCs for the Roma SJ port of Neapolis.

What do people think?

Maximus Decimus Vice Consul of Neapolis

Alignment: Neutral
Class: Aristocrat 1/Warrior 9
Race: Human
Str 10, Dex 15, Con 11, Int 12, Wis 18, Chr 17

Maximus is one of the two Vice Consuls (effective ruler) of
Neapolis, and is the senior member there of the Conservative
faction. He has considerable influence over the Imperial
Spelljamming Commission, which effectively runs Neapolis.
Maximus, from a noble family, rose to high rank in the legions,
before joining the Senate after he retired, and then being
appointed Vice Consul. He cordially hates Antonius as being a
commoner. Maximus is a patriot.

While his health is not as good as when he could route march with
the best of his men, Maximus has as sharp wits as he ever did,
and he has a talent for making brilliant guesses as to the plans
of his enemies. He is also an impressive speaker, and is
probably a major asset in the Conservative faction maintaining
effective control of Neapolis.

Maximus is married to Patricia, a noble daughter who as a wife
stays in the background, and supports her husband. She is a
strong supporter of the temple of Juno/Hera. They have several
grown-up children.

Antonius Arcarnus Vice Consul of Neapolis

Alignment: Neutral
Class: Sorcerer 1/Adeptus Mil 9
Race: Human
Str 12, Dex 13, Con 11, Int 12, Wis 14, Chr 11

Antonius is one of the two Vice Consuls (effective ruler) of
Neapolis, and is the senior member there of the Reform faction.
He has considerable influence over the common people, the
merchants, and the city government, which has no real control as
the city is effectively run by the Imperial Spelljamming
Commission. Antonius, from a middling merchant family, rose to
as high rank as an Adeptus Mil can in the legions, before joining
the Senate after he retired, and then being appointed Vice
Consul. He greatly dislikes Maximus, as he considers he embodies
all the vices that noble birth brings. Antonius is a patriot.

Antonius has maintained his health, and still regularly practices
his weapons and magical arts, as well as being a regular visitor
to the temple of Mercurius Adeptus. He works very hard at his
job, and has an effective group of aides who help him keep his
finger on the pulse of the city. Antonius is quite willing to go
out and talk to real people in taverns and their workplaces, and
listen to their grievances, and this is one of the things that
makes him beloved of the people.

Antonius is not married, though there are quite a few families
who would like to change this, but he says that he is married to
his work. One rumour has him involved with a priestess of
Mercurius Adeptus, explaining his regular visits to the temple,
but this not in fact true. Another untrue rumour is that he 'has
no interest in women'. If he ever marries it will likely be to
his long-time aide, Meria, a Celtic bard (6th level) in exile
from Albion, who is very loyal to him, but this would be
politically very difficult. He has no children.

Terren, Aide to Vice Consul Antonius

Alignment: Neutral
Class: Rogue 5/Warrior 2/Aristocrat 1
Race: Human
Str 10, Dex 14, Con 10, Int 16, Wis 15, Chr 15

Terren is a loyal aide to Vice Consul Antonius, and is one of his
'leg men' who go out and find things out for him. Terren was
personally caught by Antonius trying to rob his home, and offered
a job, and a way out of his various 'financial embarrasments', as
well as a pension for his parents. Though initially sure there
was some sort of trick, he took the job, did his military
training, and has become an enthusiastic supporter of Antonius.

Terren is a contact with the more unsavoury elements of the town,
and a few of the more intelligent ones have worked out that he
now has someone powerful backing him. The various little magical
items that he pays off people who help him show that he has
access to sources of supply no one commonly has. He openly wears
a strange bracelet, which seems to give him magical powers, and
when asked about it he smiles and says that "it's cursed".

Terren is quite a likely contact for PCs, and will pay well for
work. If they try and cheat him or his employer he will do his
best to ensure Neapolis is never safe for them again. And he
knows a lot of people...

(The bracelet gives Terren all the abilities of a Doppleganger,
but allows someone (Antonius) who has done a Find Familiar ritual
on the bracelet to look out through the wearer's eyes, hear with
their ears, and converse with them mentally, while always knowing
direction and range to the bracelet (range the same crystal
sphere). A Remove Curse spell is needed to remove the bracelet.
Though it gives all the powers of a Doppleganger, the bracelet
must always be clearly on display.)

Gran, Guard to Vice Consul Maximus

Alignment: Lawful
Class: Fighter 7/Rogue 1
Race: Human
Str 14(18), Dex 12, Con 16, Int 10, Wis 12, Chr 15

Gran is one of Vice Consul Maximus's 'leg breakers', though he is
smarter than most, and quite good at spotting cheats and liars.
He was a 'barbarian' advisor to the legion, and Maximus took him
on as a bodyguard when he retired. Gran is totally loyal to
Maximus, as he paid twice to have him raised from the dead, out
of his own pocket.

Gran was in fact a Frankish warrior who was cheated out of his
inheritance by a relative and a corrupt judge. He hates
corruption in political life, and several particularly corrupt
city guards have been found dead in alleyways with broken necks,
and even a Speak with Dead spell wont reveal what killed them.

Gran is quite a likely contact for PCs, and will turn up and try
and intimidate them into working for free. Particularly if they
are foreigners, and he has something to blame on them, though he
will grudgingly pay reasonable rates if this is needed. Gran
will be accompanied by however many 'grunts' as he thinks
necessary (treat these as Warrior 4). He wears Gauntlets of Ogre
Power.
