As mentioned in the CoAS, crystal shells are made of an unknown ceramic 
material that cannot be damaged by any known means, including a Wish 
spell.  I would say this means that in virtually all sphere this is 
true, and if for some reason the PCs need a shard of shell material, 
they'd need to go on a very long quest to find a sphere that has already 
been damaged (like the Broken Sphere or the sphere that once held the 
people who became Ephemerals, if this isn't one and the same in an 
individual campaign).
