If the creature in question is the Gravislayer, what it did was turn
objects into a "gravity source."  That didn't increase local gravity for
the object itself (i.e., creatures on a ship that becomes a gravity source
have no idea), but causes nearby objects to be drawn towards it at
increased speeds.  I suppose one could see it as something like a gravity
"donut"; the increased gravity probably only exists outside the air
envelope of the object.  It used this ability to slingshot asteroids into
the object to pulverize it before feeding.  The monster is located in the
first Spelljamer Monstrous Compendium (MC07).  Characters noticing the
increased gravity would immediately tip off *any* experienced spelljammer
that a Gravislayer is in the area.  Usually the first evidence one is
nearby is your ship being pummeled from all directions by rocks large and
small.
