I belive that the one ton area needed for a siege engine of any sort
was indicative of the minimum area needed for the crew manning it to
operate it while in a combat situation. There is a good bit of space
needed for people to man each weapon.

Agreed.

That was also a major draw for me, many of our PCs toook these skills
and feats (Ozzy, our giff fighter consistently led a ballista team
during combat using feats from this system). I used Pilot Spelljammer
rather than using a profession skill as a default. Caveat: I run a
game where role play and skills are very important.
