Subject:  Re: Leroys 3e Ship system, and experience for battles
In an effort to find a balanced system to reward my PC's for ship
encounters, here's a CR/EL thingo.  XP rewards are same as from the
DMG and normal monster stuff.  I tend to award specific extra bonus xp
to people for additional actions/ideas/tactics and whatnot so this
isnt a pure 'this is what you should give people' but more a 'go from
here'

Challenge Rating/Encounter Levels
Ships have a basic CR of 1 per 5 tons (round up), also modified by
crew as below.  Certain ships, as they are of better design, also have
modifications.  Use the higher percentage of crew when figuring their
modifier.  If the PC's have multiple ships, their basic EL is their
highest ship, plus the pure, unmodified tonnage CR of their additional
ships.

Green Crew      -3
Novice Crew     -2
Experienced Crew        -1
Veteran Crew    0
Expert Crew     +1
Master Crew     +2
Grand Master Crew       +3
Terrestrial Form        -1
Poor Form       -2
Advanced Form   +1
Capital Weapon  +1/weapon
Helmsman Class A/Major Helm     +1
Helmsman Class B/Minor Helm     +0
Every 5 helmsman levels beyond the first 5      +1
