This is a hack at converting the Helm spells - the core of SJ magic. I've posted both of these two together as they share a lot of text, and are very similar. Both are non-combat spells, but you _might_ just hold a ship together for long enough to cast one of these in an emergency. Both have a focus rather than consumed material component, as I'm pretty sure the chair is there afterwards. Interestingly the higher-level spell has a quarter the duration - presumably its power goes into the extra SR and tonnage, and maybe the Dispel resistance. This spell will not make Living Helms, and interestingly clerics have only the Minor version, but at a level less. The Major version mentions using some of your magic then running a helm means your effective level is less. Offhand I don't recall mention of this mechanic anywhere else - should this be pulled out of the spell and made a commentary? A commentary on the use of these spells from scrolls, and the tonnage these can handle, would be a good addition to the SJ equipment/magic items section. 2ndEd: ----------------------------------------------------------------- Sixth-Level Spells Create Minor Helm (Enchantment/Charm) Range: 10 yards Components: V, S, M Duration: 1 week/level Casting Time: 1 turn/level of caster Area of Effect: 1 item Saving Throw: None By casting this spell, the wizard may transform a normal chair or seat into a minor spelljammer helm suitable for powering a ship through space. This spell does not replace the need for a permanent magical helm onboard, and is used primarily as a back-up system or in emergency situations. The minor helm may power a ship of no more than two times the caster's level in tonnage. A 20th-level level wizard may therefore create a helm capable of powering a 40-ton ship. In operation, a minor helm created in such a fashion is identical to a regular, permanent, spelljamming helm, with one exception. If a helm created by this spell is successfully dispelled, it will disappear and must be created anew.
