I have used the substitution levels in my game and am VERY happy with
them. The idea is that the character levels up in his chosen class,
but a few of the abilities are different. You can only take a
substitution level at certain points (i.e. when going up to 3rd, 7th,
or 11th level is the usual)

For instance a Barbarian taking a substitution level when he goes up
to 3rd Lvlv doe not receive Trap sense like he normally would. Instead
he gains Portal sense. Equal power abilities that are tailored to the
setting are substituted for existing class abilities. It does not
affect the overall power level, but does allow for added customization
without needing to multiclass or adopt a PrC.
