I think we should definetly stick with just a straight up conversion. I would like to suggest, however, a sidebar for the helm section. I will have to go look them up, but there are a number of feats in Complete Arcane and in Complete Divine that provide a very small amount of native magical talent. Usually denoted by the daily ability to cast 2 or 3 0-Level spells. In my game this is enough magical ability to pilot a helm, although only at SR1. This sounds like it would fill your games need for a low level helmsman who is not a spellcasting class, but also allow us to keep the helm a straight conversion. Another nice thing about this approach is that the feat taken does provide an advantage at times when there is no piloting needed. -Loki, off to find the books with the feats referrenced as soon as he is done with the dinner that just came off his stove....
