I don't see it .. really .. the idea is kinda cool .. 

but this is Swords and Sorcery D&D .. not Star Trek D&D . .

on the other hand .. I am familiar with Windships from the Mystara setting
.. they have Cloud Keels: which allows the ship to float in the air and move
at 40' with out winds.. it is the winds that propel the ship .. so I don't
see them going into space really .. unless there is a "wind genorator" of
some kind at the back of the ship aimed at the sails.

to me when somenoe says "Airship" I think of a gnome dirigible .. again from
the Mystara setting << yes I like that world alot :-}~ >>
