Funny you should mention that.  A while back, I did a little write up on 
Darnannon for my players.  I never posted it. I used the information 
posted here, but then I also wrote a short history of Darnannon and talked 
about some branches of the elven race.  I came up with a handful of rare 
elf races to be used as potential PCs.  One of these races is an offshoot 
of the wood elf called the Olvane.  In my write up, they have an innate 
shape-shifting ability, but only into a plant or plant-like being.  

So, in theory, with a little magic and/or cross-pollenization, it may in 
fact be possible.  I just never would have put 2 and 2 together there.
