If you want a steam engine.. Use heat metal with a permanency spell as a
boiler and a chill metal as a condenser.  More spells = more horse power

burning engines are not recommended for intersphere travel. however within
a given sphere that could be fine. if everyone will allow this I do know a
book  that has different engines that works well enough for SpellJammer in
3.X edition  D&D and that's Airships by Bastion Press. Heck even some of
thier ships are  strange enough to be used in SJ without attracting undue
attention.
