Generally I would tend to think that a ship hitting a wall of force would 
suffer the same results as if it had hit a brick wall.. especially a brick 
wall that didn't have any give to it. The above sounds just about correct. 

Of course given that, as that tactic began to be common in the known spheres 
I'd guess that ships would start developing preventative measures against 
it. My first choice for ships without a forward ram would be the addition of 
farforward rigging. Ropes to slow the ship and keep it from taking major 
damage in case it should come face to face with such a spell.
