Inspired by Danton May's contribution, I thought this might be some use to people: "Primordial Limbo" - ROM, Feb 2005 Primordial Limbo is not a standard part of the TSR/D&D cosmology. Where it is used, it is the plane from which all others rose, and back to which all others will eventually return. This is the true Limbo sometimes referred to, as opposed to the Outer Plane of the same name. It is the place where things go when they are 'cast into limbo', and it is not a place from which you can return, no matter how powerful you are, without outside help, if you went there involuntarily. Some very powerful wizards, Arch Mage and above, can open Limbo Gates, which allow them to (slowly) search the infinite realms of Primordial Limbo for artifacts or creatures cast into there. Some Master Illusionists are supposed to be able to work with Limbo, and use it to create things, or provide instant travel, from literally anywhere to anywhere else they know of. It is said that this plane can show many faces, depending on how it is approached. The "Wood between Worlds", which the Yellow and Green Rings allow travel to and from, is said by some to be a face of Limbo, the creative one. The grey mists of limbo, in which things are eternally imprisoned, existing as nothing more than a concept, is said to be the destructive face. It is said that the Phlogiston is also a face, a neutral one, or maybe one associated with change, and this explains all the communication problems, and it's strange nature, as you are basically just a concept believing in the travel of it itself, while there. It is possible that at least some varieties of the Endless Stairway might be another face. Primordial Limbo might be the 'stuff' which is between worlds, which do not share the same ethereal or astral planes. Some ideas of there being a hierarchy of worlds, groupings within groupings, with names like universe, multiverse, or even omniverse, might have ideas of alternate varieties of Primordial Limbo between them, like Ur Limbo, or Meta Limbo. But, these might be just more 'faces' of true Limbo. -- Dreamer dreamer@??????.?????.??.uk http://www.romsys.demon.co.uk/
