Isn't the flitter itself alive?  It is a plant, and it
actually should need sunlight and water on a regular
basis.  If it's wings aren't trimmed, they curve and
grow inward.  Maybe its lifeforce itself is what
provides the motive force somehow.  Maybe it stores
the sunlight, like all plants, and whne it wants it
can use the energy to release little jets of steam
that push it, like a mother plant does.
