Subject: Re: Barakanii - Dysonspace Original Race
This is the 'fourth' original race intended to be used in the
Dysonspace write-up, and a big reason why things went wrong, and
why they are how they are today.

You could say they are more 'primitive' that the other three
races, they are certainly less enlightened, and not even very
good at 'enlightened self interest'.

Still, they made they way off the home world under their own
power, which cetainly says something about them.

Somewhere, beneath the ground, in some far off crystal sphere,
they may be waiting. Waiting for the ways to Dysonspace to become
open again.

Barakanii - Dysonspace Original Race

These were earth sharks, originally the geology experts, among
the great races which planned to create Dysonspace. But, they
became an enemy, promise breakers. As a race they swim through
earth, sliding along fault lines, as a normal fish would swim
through currents of water, finding and grazing on bodies of ore,
and capable of dropping into a deep fasting-slumber, so they do
not need sustinance, for many millenium. They were driven to
leave their home world by lack of resources, in immense solid
rock ships, powered by geological forces. They lived in cities
made from carefully engineered fault lines, warmed by shaped lava
vents, and cooled by water tables and underground rivers. A
shared taste for refined minerals, blended in delicate ways, was
one of the things that held their society together. Gold was
regarded as their finest spice, organics like coal and meat was
unfortunately poisonous.

The barakanii servant race of semi-intelligent starfish, the
barakasii, could also swim through the rock, though more slowly;
they were far more resistant to being poisoned by organics. They
were valued for their manipulatory ability, and used for
engineering work, and the mining and processing of minerals.
Though they hid this from the other races, the barakanii often
mistreated their servants, toying with them, or using them as
food, and they in return hated them with a sullen but hopeless
anger.

After the homanii blended themselves with the barakanii,
producing races with hands, almost all of the barakasii were
disposed of, as no longer needed. They were replaced by dwarves
and gnomes, who came to realise just how bad their situation was,
and the shark men, some of whom could take on fully humanoid
form, who gave the barakanii access to the resources of the
oceans, previously denied to them. Some say that the homanii
suspected the barakanii, and deliberately made the dwarves a race
who considered their word and their promises something that
should not be put aside. The barakanii were devastated when the
other three races turned on them, and removed all the dwarves and
gnomes from their servitude. They swore vengence. The shark men
were also offered a chance to leave, but, most chose to stay,
probably because living in the oceans put them in a much better
bargaining position.

When the barakanii first contacted the alliance of the homanii,
sauranii and illithanii what they saw was the vast potential for
profit. Almost untouched new worlds, new servants to make them
better food, and, when the great project was considered, food
practically forever. They did not expect to be driven away in the
same way the other races were, and believe that someone cheated
them. Not even their deepest fasting-slumber enabled them to
ignore the fear. So, they will wait, and bide their time, until
they can take their revenge, and gain access to the almost
infinate veins of the sphere.
