Volo, shortened from Volothamp Geddarm (sp.), is the author of a series
of books describing various parts of Toril and bits of realmslore
associated with each, and editted by Elminster the Mage.  I hear Ed
Greenwood had a hand in their publication as well.

Some of these include:
Volo's Guide to all Things Magical
Volo's Guide to the North
Volo's Guide to the Sword Coast
Volo's Guide to Cormyr

There are a couple more, but I don't remember the titles.  Hope this helps.
