as my campaign finally comes to the point where an iron anchor will fall
from the sky (the "wildspace"-adventure) and i am going to place the rock
of bral in it´s own sphere (the superb writeup of bralspace was done on
this list, i think), i need another asteroid city near toril. i recently
found the excellent writeup of Dragon Rock done by thatotherguy
five years back. it´s a godsend for me, though there are some questions
left:
did anyone ever draw a map of the place? atm, i am searching the 6-part
writeup and the description about the mages guilds for all geographical
clues, but i know i am a terrible carthographer. :o(
should no map show up, i´ll try to draw one myself and would gladly share
it with the list (although it certiinly won´t be a pretty thing), but there
are some points where i need your help (as i am a relative newbie to all
things spelljamming).
for easier reference, i list all url´s to the original postings as well as
the word document in which i have compiled all i found at the end of this
posting.
i find several unclear points in the writeups:
- size & form of the asteroid: dragon rock is described as a 10 mile
long "spearhead" (i imagine it´s supposed to be something like a wedge?),
about 2 miles broad at it´s blunt end. i´d go for about 1 mile thickness at
the blunt end, please correct me if i am "wrong". there´s a lake in the
middle - on both sides or only one? the blunt end has a hill ("government
hill") - how much of the wedge does that area take up? i would make it
rather large (at least 1/3 of the wedge) so that the city´s area can be
reduced.
- site density: the whole asteroid (apart from the goveremt hill and the
elven embassy) is described as densely populated. how many inhabitants
would a city of THIS size (it´s a two-sided city, so the area (and it´s
population) is doubled!) have?
- population: "uncounted thousands" => that may reach from a medium sized
city like tilverton (about 12000 inhabitants) to a metropolis like
waterdeep. also, the question of food comes up, and with it the magnitude
of spelljamming traffic from nearby farming asteroids. personally, i
see "the rock" as a city with not more than 30.000 permanent citizens, and
perhaps 10.000 visitors. remember, all visitors must have come on
spelljamming ships, so if we can come up with an "average crew number", we
could roughly calculate the number of ships visiting - and with that the
number of docks in the city.
- number of docks: see population.
- approximate number of a) large merchant organizations, b) small
independant merchants, c) mercenary groups
- number (and frequency) of patrols in the districts (see volos guide to
waterdeep for examples)
