Alternatively, you could let the sea flood a certain percentage of the underdark and call
it The Undersea.

The Undersea could then have creatures in it that are hybrids between sea creatures and
underdark creatures. You could have something like Aquatic drow if it wasn't for the
poisonous mineral content.

Maybe The Undersea could have a different chemical content from the "oversea" (in the same
way that land locked water has no salt in it). Perhaps the minerals only exist on the
surface layers of the sea and don't go down further than a mile or so.

Bearing in mind that sea creatures that live in the surface sea might get saturated with
the very stuff that is poisonous to non-dwarves, the undersea might be a food source for
non-dwarves. This could give you an economy between the island, the underdark and The
Undersea.
