I think part of your problem is that this is a closed sphere.
There are a lot of nice interesting ideas here, but, if this
sphere ceases to be closed, you have just trashed your campaign's
economy for rare metals.

Adding some scenario ideas associate with the campaign would be a
good idea. For example, the Arcane are almost certain that
someone else is smuggling metals out of the sphere. They have
tried all sorts of things, but got no where. So, they approach a
group of adventurers, with a good reputation for reliability, and
swear them to secrecy. Whether the Arcane intend that the
adventurers get to live to spend their reward...

How is the smuggling being done? The obvious answer is that
someone has an alternative entrance to the sphere. One might be
from the elemental fire plane to the centre of the sun, using a
special fire-proof spelljammer. Another might be an artifact that
can open a portal once per week in any sphere that you have spent
a year attuning it to, only one attuned sphere at a time. A third
might be someone has managed to skry the origin of metals from
the sphere, and used this info to craft a difficult to use
sphere-to-sphere Gate, bypassing the polar portal.

Throwing in a secret underwater domed civilization would be an
idea (humans? renegade dwarves? sea elves?). In LotR the hazard
was a balrog, for deep metal mining. Maybe an elemental lord of
earth wants to take over the sphere. Lots of possibilities.

If you want to make this sphere really important, say that Helms
forged as close to the core as possible gain extra levels of
enchantment, up to +12 at the deepest most difficult and
dangerous Helm Forge (making an 18th level enchanter capable of
producing a 30th level Helm). And, that this world is the main
source of the high grade Arcane Helms.

If you did this, I think most of the crystal spheres in the area
would be fortified!

Just a few ideas! [grin]
