    I like how dwarves can drink the water without ill-effect, and it makes
sense.  I'd also submit that gnomes should possibly gain a bonus to the
save, because of their close relation to dwarves.  I dig the Hammer of
Morradin :)

    Ok, read this, and something struck me.  The greatest danger to an army
is not an enemy, but sheer boredom.  High pay is great, but if you do
nothing but sit on your butt for months on end, well, it just sucks.  So
here's a suggestion: Metalspace (sounds a bit silly, honestly...maybe a bit
more interesting name?) is not unknown.  In fact, it is well known.  So thus
there are all kinds of pirates, prospectors, and other undesirables trying
to get into the sphere.  A common "sport" for the giff & dwarves might be to
be the first ones to find & destroy tresspassers.  Thus it might be common
for giff captains to compete to see who can find pirates first, and the
harder the challenge, the greater the glory.  Not a "sphere under constant
siege", but enough action to keep the battle-happy mercs active and happy.

    Another idea for conflict: creatures from the planes.  Maybe for the
Xorn, Metalspace is the "land of milk & honey."  Insert a long, low-grade
war as the dwarves try to keep the Xorn from overrunning the sphere; maybe
even a new moon that was once a xorn stoneship that now orbits the principle
world, where xorn and dwarves fight over the "promised land."  Other foes
could include dark dwarves & dark elves, dao (a dao caliph would make for an
excellent Big Bad Guy), and even azer & bladelings.  I could even see
Yugoloths taking a real interest as well, both suppying mercs of their own
to all sides and always looking to steal the precious metals for their own
war machines.
