Interesting read. We are fortunate to live in a high-tech age of computers and other great gizmos. I'd point out that computers have revolutionized society in so many ways, including vastly increasing the ability to design and manufacture new product. Until people figure out mass production, technological progress will be quite slow. And with each magic item essentially hand crafted, I don't see mass produced magical gear happening. Look at how expensive the stuff in the DMG is. Yes, the Mercane have a monopoly on producing helms and related Spelljammer technology, but the high cost of gear would lend me to believe that even they don't have mass production capability. Another reason things stay the same is tradition. I found out that shirts have buttons on the left because it made it easier for servants to dress their employers, for instance. Another example: check out www.howstuffworks.com and look for Christmas traditons. Finally there's the It Just Works theory of doing things. Why is magic missile so popular when other spells can give you a better bang for the buck? It just works. -mikey :) "Genius? Nothing! Sticking to it is the genius..
