Done any 3d/2d digital work before, Alduin? :) "Short learning curve"...mmmm ;) Paint SHop's creat, tried Demo of Carrara ages ago hoenslty can't remmebe rmuch about it. I like using Bryce (very easy to egt the hang of and sort of related ot Carrara), Paint Shop Pro (95% of the functionality of Photoshop at 1/5th the price and simpler), and for modelling I use Rhino, which is jsut awesome.
