I have always treated the Spelljammer as a new deity still in its
infancy (before metamorphising into its final form, sort of a Star Trek,
The Motion Picture thing (like V-Ger)), learning and looking for its
niche.  It may sound like a silly idea, but my player's grasped the
mystique readily and it added that "legendary epic feeling" to their
adventure.  (Though they only viewed it from a distance, and never got
very close.)
