Subject: Re: Item: Mop of Spelljamming
My PC's were checking out the storage closet in the helmroom of a crashed
ship, and off the top of my head I put a Broom and a Mop in them. at the
same time I realised the PC's needed a little more, to the broom was a
broom of flying (but the command words are unknown) and I figured the mop
would be something similar:
The question reamains if the PC's will ever figure it out :)
Mop of Spelljamming.
This device functions as a Broom of Flying and usually has the
command words written on them so that they show up when a read magic is
cast upon it. Also written on the mop is the phrase “Swab the deck”
Once the mop has swabbed the deck of a ship for the number of turns
equal to the tonnage of the ship, it becomes linked to that ship. While in
flight within the air envelope of the linked ship the mop can act as a
helm, as long as there is no other operational Helm. The mop becomes fixed
into position relative to the ship as an Immovable rod while it is acting
as a helm.
If the rider is knocked off the mop, experiences Spelljammer shock,
or the mop moved, the helm function becomes disabled for 1d4 turns. If the
Spelljamming is ended voluntarily, the mop can be re-manned immediately.
The flying function is not affected.
For the mop to become unlinked to the ship, it must be out of the
envelope for a number of hours equal to the tonnage of the ship, even if
the linked ship is destroyed. After this it can be re-linked to the ship.
If the Mop is not linked to a ship, It can itself be a small
spelljammer, capable of tactical speed only if the rider is a Magic user.
Otherwise the mop is unable to move outside of an air envelope. (Though it
will continue with whatever inertia it had when it left the air envelope.)
Mops are generally used as a back-up helm, or for short journeys on
craft that lack space for a proper helm (Wreck boats, Full Barges). These
are rarely used for a main helm, because of a lack of comfort.
Another frightening tactic is to use them to pilot kamikaze boats,
allowing the pilot to release control and leave the ship at the last
minute.
Other tactics include sneaking a saboteur aboard as a crewman who
swabs the deck until the mop is linked. Then after the Main Helm is
disabled, the saboteur with the mop flies to an unreachable location, such
as under the keel, and takes control of the ship.
Mops of flying are very rare items
90% are minor helms
10% are major Helms
