Actually that's the first good reason I've seen for mind flayers to actually breed psionic creatures/thralls. It would explain why there are gith (of all sorts) and other creatures illithids modified to be psionic. It takes 2-5 mind flayers to run a series helm with each seat powering 20 tons (max 60 for the entire helm even if more than 3 seats) IIRC and nautiloids are 35 tons.
