In 3e the only way to do this fairly is stack all spellcaster levels.
Since multi-classing is now simply advancing 1 class at a time in
different classes. In 1st edition the proper way to do this (based on
the rules) is to take 1/2 (or 1/3 if triple multi-classed) of the
levels of the lower level spellcasting class(es) added to the level of
the highest level spellcasting class (this is exactly how you determine
the actual level of a multi-class character in 1st edition). I've
never seen anything defined for 2e in this way.

In 1st edition dual-classing worked very similar to 3e multi-clasing
but when you went back to 1st level you suddenly gained levels much
more easily once again due to fewer xp being required so DMs have the
choice of either adding all the spellcaster levels together or taking
the primary (highest level) spellcasting class and adding all the xp in
spellcasting classes (and levels for paladins and rangers since they
can't cast spells at 1st level) together before determining what
equivalent level the character falls in for that class based on xp. In
2e the same method seems logical.
