Funny you should mention the long travel times... I just got done making
the last revisions to SJ3E stuff I started awhile ago. When I was
detailing the Phlogiston Plane, I came up with song portals- huge
magical devices that open portals into the Flow, artificially create a
flow current, and stay open long enough for ships to pass through. If
you're interested, here's the link to the details I wrote.

And the intro page to some other SJ3E stuff I wrote:

Subject: [SPELLJAMMER] Some random thoughts
So, we all know that elves live a long, long time. We also know that it
can
take a long, long time to travel in Spelljammer. And we know that the
fast
Unhuman War covered a vast number of spheres.
So, is it possible that the First Unhuman War hasn't actually ended?
That
there are still entire Elven Fleets, in far distant spheres, still
hunting
the enemy? That there are Elven Admirals who just haven't gotten around
to
checking in to base, because they've only been in the field for a few
centuries?
Could there also be vastly militaristic societies of Goblinoids, honed
by
the unnatural selection of genocidal warfare, skilled and organized
beyond
the dreams of the Scro? Societies who have never known anything but
endless
warfare with the vast might of the Elven Imperial Fleets?
Is it possible that the Admirals of the combined Elven Fleets *know* the
war
still continues? That they maintain the fiction of a "first" and a
"second"
Unhuman War for political reasons?
Just a few thoughts. Plot seeds, or rumors to fuel the paranoia and the
penny-dreadfuls of Braal.
