I tried to solve that by using steam jet engine,
petrol based jet engine which is cheaper than magical
helms. I also use propellers, paddle wheels,
solar/mana sail, balloon/blimp/dirigible. These are
only asteroid belt ships since they take a long time
to reach even a close destination. I am also using a
spellengine helm that allows non-magic using pilots to
man the helm.

I am trying to think and create more small ships. My
players wanted to have more control with their
characters. My players wanted to fly their own ship or
at least a fighter type ship rather than being just a
passenger.

I added a wheelship, a small ship. (Please no Detroit
Red Wing jokes. =))

I think the artist who created the ship should name
it. =)

Yes, transjamming was a magic item before and I can
easily make the phase into a magic item also.
