Yeah I thought of that once I hit send. Oh well. I also figured that
since the description says anything placed in the cup will get
accelerated, I figure that includes any green slime residue left in the
barrel, or for that matter anything left in the barrel. Hence, those
accelerators are self-cleaning!

With that accelaration the green slime undoubtedly dies during
acceleration, long before it potentially strikes anything.  And if it
doesn't then the simply striking of air molecules as it leaves the air
envelope should finish it off (think of it like a neutron bomb).
