I don't see why a catapult wouldn't work. Instead of setting the catapult to
arc the shot why not set it to slap the shot straight. Just have a different
release. That way you have a more constant firing path. Besides if it still
fires at an arc it would arc some before it left the ships gravity. Then
travel in a straight line until it hit another ships gravity and start to
fall again. Still possible to hit a ship with it just be fun guessing where
it lands with a new catapult captain.
