My question is how you'd arrive at this situation in the first place.
I'd never let the sphere move with a ship, it'd have to be controlled
as usual.  Eventually the sphere will win out...

Glue usually causes some alteration in order to hold things together
and it could't alter the shell.  On the other hand, if your shell is
not smooth the glue might settle in the irregularities and still hold
the item onto it.

I would only allow access if the whole thing is accessable.

There are rules in the SJ boxed set for dealign with ships caught in a
closing portal, IIRC.  Presumably your question's answered there (I
forget what the rules are since they aren't ones I use often).

I would say no.  The key two questions to my mind are:  do you allow
them to use other race only objects and how does the crystal helm work.
 If the helm must be controlled by a thri-kreen mind nothing without a
similar mind can control it.  If it must draw power from thri-kreen
essence in some manner, no other type of essence would work.  Here's a
related question, would you let a non-spellcaster rogue use a major
helm with this skill?
