There is also a series by Lyndon Hardy which includes The Master of the 5 Magics, Secret of the Sixth Magic and Riddle of the Seven Realms which goes into much detail about the differences in reality from one prime to another (Metamagic). Specifically the last book goes into that, but the whole series is good. Remember, not all ideas need to come from TSR/WoTC/etc. Just because a book is specifically about a different type or style of fiction does not mean it is bad or wrong.
